What is a condensate drain line?
A condensate drain line is the pipe that carries water produced during the air conditioning process away from the indoor unit to a safe drainage point.
During operation, an air conditioner cools air by passing it over cold evaporator coils. This process produces condensation, which collects as water inside the unit. The condensate drain line is a small diameter pipe (typically PVC or copper) that channels this water away from the equipment and out of the building, usually to a nearby drain, pit, or external ground area.
When a drain line becomes blocked, water backs up inside the indoor unit and can leak onto ceilings, walls, or floor areas below. A blocked line may also trigger a float switch, which shuts down the entire system to prevent water damage. Common causes of blockages include algae growth, mineral buildup, dust accumulation, or debris drawn in from outside air. In the Perth climate, where humidity can be high for part of the year, drain lines are especially prone to algae and mould growth if not maintained.
Regular inspection and cleaning of the condensate drain line prevents costly water damage and unexpected system failures. If your air conditioner is leaking water indoors or has stopped running, the drain line is often the first component an air conditioning contractor will check. Clearing blockages early is far simpler and cheaper than managing water damage to your property.
