What is a condenser unit?

The condenser unit sits outside your home or business and handles the second half of the cooling cycle. While your indoor unit absorbs warmth from inside, the condenser takes that hot refrigerant from the compressor and releases the heat outdoors, preparing the refrigerant to cycle back inside and repeat.

Inside the condenser cabinet you will find three key components. The compressor pressurizes the refrigerant gas. The condenser coil, a network of metal fins and tubing, allows heat to transfer from the refrigerant to the outside air. The fan draws ambient air across the coil to speed up that heat exchange. All three work together continuously while your system runs.

In Perth backyards, condenser units typically mount on a concrete pad at ground level, though some installations place them on the roof or an elevated platform for better airflow. The unit needs clearance on all sides, ideally 60 centimetres or more, so the fan intake stays unobstructed. Poor placement near walls, fences, or shaded areas forces the unit to work harder and reduces efficiency.

Without a functioning condenser, refrigerant cannot complete its cycle and your system cannot cool. Noise from the fan and compressor is normal during operation.
