What is an evaporator coil?

The evaporator coil is the indoor metal tubing and fins inside your air conditioning unit that absorbs heat from room air, causing refrigerant inside to evaporate and cool the air before it circulates back through your home.

Located in the indoor unit of your split or ducted air conditioning system, the evaporator coil is a network of small metal tubes and aluminium fins where the actual cooling happens. Cold refrigerant flows through the tubing, and as warm room air passes over the coil's fins, heat transfers into the refrigerant. This heat causes the refrigerant to evaporate from liquid to gas, which absorbs the energy and leaves the air cooler before it gets pushed back into your home.

The size and efficiency of your evaporator coil directly affects your cooling capacity. A larger coil with more surface area can transfer more heat, which is why matching the coil to your room size and outdoor condenser unit matters for performance. In Perth's hot summers, a properly sized evaporator coil keeps your system running at its rated capacity without overworking the compressor.

Maintenance is important here. Dust, pollen, and moisture accumulate on the fins and can restrict airflow or lead to mould growth, reducing cooling efficiency and potentially damaging the coil. Regular cleaning and filter changes help prevent blockages. If your air conditioning isn't cooling properly despite the fan running, a frozen or dirty evaporator coil is often the culprit. Repairs or replacements may be needed if the coil develops leaks or internal damage. A qualified air conditioning contractor can diagnose and service evaporator coil issues to restore your system's performance.
