What is reverse cycle air conditioning?

Reverse cycle air conditioning is a heat pump system that reverses its refrigerant flow to provide both cooling in summer and heating in winter from one unit.

Reverse cycle air conditioning operates by reversing the direction of refrigerant flow within the system, allowing it to extract heat from outside air and transfer it indoors for winter heating, or reject indoor heat outside for summer cooling. This contrasts with cooling-only systems, which can only remove heat and leave a building dependent on separate heating equipment during Perth's cooler months.

The mechanism relies on a reversing valve that changes how refrigerant circulates through the indoor and outdoor coils.
